The question of employee training and exercise is a changing one depending on industry you are serving, but a few things remain the same regardless of industry. The most important thing is that all employee’s understand the emergency action plan that is in place and if or any there is any hazardous material on site.
A generalized according to OSHA standards of training would include:
- Individual roles and responsibilities;
- Threats, hazards, and protective actions;
- Notification, warning, and communications procedures;
- Means for locating family members in an emergency;
- Emergency response procedures;
- Evacuation, shelter, and accountability procedures;
- Location and use of common emergency equipment; and
- Emergency shutdown procedures.
Clearly in an emergency panic and the stress of the situation can create communication break down and error. Once proper training has been put in place for the employees and some drill scenarios are run. It is important to make these scenarios as real life as possible.
