What Does Your Plan Need To Include About Hazardous Substances?

Many businesses, large and small, can have hazardous material on site or at a neighboring facility or company.  Often these hazardous material can go unnoticed in regards to having an emergency response plan in place.

So what is are hazardous materials you might be wondering.   Hazardous materials are  flammable, explosive, toxic, noxious, corrosive, biological, oxidizable, or radioactive substances that can pose risk to environment, people, and atmosphere in and around a facility.  This can extend even out to protecting not only employees, but the general public from hazardous materials should they get out.  An established zone of safety is always needed when dealing with hazardous materials.

Even if hazardous material aren’t within your facility they can still come from an external outside source such as a semi truck carrying diesel that overturns near your business causing a hazard to your building and employees.

If you have chemicals on your facility

OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200)

” requires employers who use hazardous chemicals to inventory them, keep the manufacturer-supplied Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for them in a place accessible to workers, label containers of these chemicals with their hazards, and train employees in ways to protect themselves against those hazards.”
